Tooblue Technologies, Inc. has produced a very cool SharePoint-based product aimed at solving inherent limitations in SharePoint's navigation:  limited to site collection, visible only from SharePoint sites.

 

The CorpNav IE Toolbar for SharePoint is an IE Toolbar Add-in that displays a navigation menu of hyperlinks.  The menu is defined in a SharePoint list, providing SharePoint admins with a centralized means of controlling the menu content.  Using SharePoint's folder/item permissions, the menu experience can be tailored for specific users or groups.

 

The Corpnav IE Toolbar for SharePoint also exposes a link to My Site and reproduces the My Links.  It also provides direct access to any sharepoint or other admin-defined search facilities, exposing the search textbox, a search scope dropdown, and a search execute button.

 

The main idea is to expose these UI features (menu, search, My Site, My Links) on the IE Toolbar so users have ever-present access to them, regardless of what website they are on.  We are also nearing completion of a windows application to expose the same UI outside of Internet Explorer.
